Sulphur, found in MSM, is a key player in the formation and fortification of joint cartilage. The basic molecules that form joint cartilage are long chains of glycosaminoglycans that are linked together by strong bonds between two sulphur atoms that reduce flexibility of the chains, and makes cartilage firm and resilient.

For sulphur to enter the body, it is thought to pass through the digestive wall where it is incorporated into serum proteins, but for this to occur, it needs to be present in simple organic molecules, such as MSM.
